Past

While working as a freelance in the 1980s, I did consultancy work for Leeds Federated Housing Association (on their tenants engagement
newsletter); for Leeds City Council (producing an exhibition on the history of the African-Caribbean community in Leeds); for  Leeds Polytechnic (profiling their achievements in equal opportunities); and for the Leeds West Indian Carnival (producing a photographic exhibition on the history of Carnival in Leeds)

Present

In 2009 – 2010 I worked as a consultant for The Higher Education Academy’s Centre for Sociology, Anthropology & Politics (C-SAP), on a project to examine the the risks and opportunities facing sociology in HE and to consider how employable sociology students are thought to be by their teachers. The report (with Anna Gruszczynska) was published as Getting into Work: The Benefits of a Sociology Degree.

In 2010 I worked on an evaluation of a project led by the Centre for Good Relations on an estate in east Leeds. The report was published as one of a series of short pamphlets on best practice in neighbourhood development.

From 2009 – 2012 I am working for the Higher Education Academy’s Islamic Studies Network, initially under the auspices of C-SAP (now wound up). The project is mapping good practice on the teaching of issues relating to Islam within social science courses in UK universities. The first two phases of this project with the Higher Education Academy’s Islamic Studies Network have been published in two volumes (with Malcolm Todd) titled Teaching Islam in the Social Sciences.  They can be downloaded free from among the C-SAP publications here.
