This is an illustrated talk I do for Ben Carrington’s University of Texas students on their ‘Maymester’ in Leeds each summer. It goes with a walking/talking tour of the city which takes in the highs and lows (including the David Oluwale story) of Leeds. It’s such a pleasure working with these bright young Americans.
The lecture references Janet Douglas’s wonderful chapter ‘Cranes over the city: the centre of Leeds 1980-2008’ in the excellent Sport, Leisure and Culture in the Postmodern Northern City by Pete Bramham and Steven Wagg (Ashgate 2009). That book also contains Ben’s fascinating account of living and studying in Leeds the 199os (‘Leeds and the topographies of race: in six scenes’).
Although it’s in slide form, there are lots of useful facts for anyone trying to make sense of this divided city. My article on this site called ‘Diverse communities and the question of cohesion’ is perhaps more useful on the facts – and interpretations – of ‘racial’ division in Leeds.
