Invited by Jenny Zobel and her colleagues at the Centre for Global Education, which is hosted by York St John University, I gave a talk to the good citizens of York on the theme of learning about the globe by learning in and with the multicultural areas of British cities (in my case, Harehills and Chapeltown in Leeds). As well as this ‘experiential learning’, value-driven and emotionally charged, I recommended learning from the expressive arts – using some of my formative influences (James Baldwin, The Beatles, James Brown, Charlie Parker and the Leeds West Indian Carnival). The PowerPoint presentation with all my illustrative photos is here – hopefully it will make some sense.
